Credits, Objectives and Faculty
Accreditation (CME & CEU)
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential
Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the Keck School of Medicine of the
University of Southern California and the National Consortium of Breast
Centers.The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California is
accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.The
Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California designates this
educational activity for a maximum of 32 category 1 credits toward the AMA
Physician’s Recognition Award.
Each physician should claim only
those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
Provider approved by the California State Board of Registered Nursing Provider Number CEP 00105. Nurses from states other than California must check their local State Board for specific continuing education policies. Conference CBE/BSE session 2/22/04, 8.0 contact hours, conference 2/22/04, 2.5 contact hours, 2/23/04, 7.5 contact hours, 2/24/04, 7.5 contact hours, 2/25/04, 6.5 contact hours. To receive the 2.5 contact hours the attendee must attend the entire 2.5 hours of the Sunday conference sessions; to receive the 7.5 contact hours the attendee must attend the entire 7.5 hours of the Monday conference sessions; to receive the 7.5 contact hours, the attendee must attend the entire 7.5 hours of the Tuesday conference sessions; and to receive the 6.5 contact hours the attendee must attend the entire 6.5 hours of the Wednesday conference sessions. Category 1 hours will be given if there is partial attendance.
The AAPA (American Academy of Physician Assistants) accepts Category 1 of CME approval from organizations accredited by ACCME to grant Category 1 hours toward the Physician’s Recognition Award. Category A CE credits are being arranged through the American Society of Radiological Technologists. Each 1 hour session=1 CE and 2 hour sessions=2 CE’s. These are continuing education credits for mammography technologists and radiology technologists.
Conference Objectives
• Review the ACR Mammography Accreditation Program requirements and process in an interactive format
• Learn what ACR reviewers evaluate so that mammography quality is improved and accreditation may be passed on the first attempt
• Learn reasons why breast centers fail accreditation
• Learn about recent updates on MQSA and accreditation
• List three side effects of chemotherapy and describe one management technique for each side effect
• Understand the role nurses have in preoperative teaching and the benefit to the patient in preparing her for her surgical experience prior to the surgery date.
• Be able to describe the concept of “transformation surgery” and how adopting this concept allows the patient to see her surgery as a positive experience rather than a loss/negative experience
• Explain the nursing role in patient education
• Identify two measures of patient satisfaction and how to implement them in any setting
• Describe two new national trends related to measuring and rewarding performance improvement.
• Discuss the functional areas provided within the “Military Model”
• Specify the benefits to the staff and patients in the coordinated treatment environment
• Describe the role of breast ultrasound in the evaluation of breast masses
• Review scientific proof substantiating imaging surveillance of the “probably benign” lesion
• Attendees will review changes in CPT coding for 2004, as well as updated payment rates
• Attendees will develop an understanding of productivity concepts that they can utilize to improve the patient experience and financial viability of their breast centers
• Demonstrate the statistical validation of the benefits of screening mammography in reducing breast cancer mortality
• Review the options for reconstruction of the breast following therapeutic surgery for breast cancer
• Discuss the positives and negatives of immediate verses delayed reconstruction
• Discuss the necessary information that needs to be presented to a patient to obtain informed consent for these procedures
• Understand the legal requirements of duty, negligence, causation and damages in a medical malpractice case
• Learn appropriate communication practices to minimize “losing” a patient to follow-up
• Appreciate the complexity of the “missed breast cancer” malpractice case and the manner in which it may be successfully defended
• Describe the current status and future directions for breast ultrasound
• Describe practical and operational issues regarding breast ultrasound and MR in clinical practice
• Understand the expectations patients have today of the health care professionals involved in their care and treatment
• Learn about the profound impact each Breast Center team member has on the patient’s physical and emotional well being, short and long term
• Describe the benefits of patient empowerment by having an informed patient be able to participate in the decision making about her care with the professionals taking care of her
• Learn why patient education is important, starting with the diagnosis process
• Learn the benefits of the patient education to the patient’s psychological well being and overall satisfaction with her care
• Describe current breast cancer prevention strategies for women at a high risk for breast cancer
• Review the natural history of noninvasive breast cancer
• Discuss oncoplastic surgery in relation to noninvasive breast cancer
