ASTRO - American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology - As you know, a diagnosis of cancer can be devastating for patients and their families. They feel overwhelmed and confused about the various treatment options available to them. To help patients better understand how radiation therapy can be used for cancer, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology has produced 17 color brochures (including three in Spanish). They address how radiation is used for many cancer types, the equipment uses by radiation oncologists, cover possible side effects and offer suggestions for how to cope during treatment. These brochures are available for free download.

Be a Survivor - Created by a physician to help you and your loved ones become active participants in your treatment.

Between Us - a breast cancer survivor created project of Affinityfilms, Inc. a nonprofit organization. We offer a First Aid Kit for women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

BreastCancerTrials.org - a free and confidential, online resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, or those at risk, BreastCancerTrials.org (BCT.org) educates patients about clinical trials and helps them find trials personalized to their situation. BCT.org presents trial summaries and participating research sites in an easy-to-read format, encouraging patients to consider and discuss trial participation with a breast care professional.

Breast Lump Info - Information on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options for women with benign breast lumps. Site includes patient stories, videos and an ‘Ask a Nurse’ call in number.

Focus on Healing through Movement & Dance for the Breast Cancer Survivor - Video - As seen in People Magazine, this program is endorsed by the top breast cancer organizations. It shows five women, all survivors, ages 35 to 72 doing dance-based movements at differing levels of ability. The exercises help reduce the risk of lymphedema, improve range-of-motion, improve self-esteem, and help improve the quality of life after surgery. This program is now being offered in over 40 hospitals, including Sloan-Kettering (New York), Foxchase (Philadelphia), Swedish (Seattle) and so on.

FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered - providing support for women at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

Imaginis - a website that provides detailed information on breast cancer and breast health.

Intimacy After Cancer: A Woman's Guide - This book is evidence-based (gold standard), written in plain language, and includes a multitude of interviews with oncologists, breast care nurses, and survivors. This book is chalked full of answers to direct, tough, and embarrassing questions that a women can read in the privacy of their own homes.

Men Against Breast Cancer - Men Against Breast Cancer is the first national non-profit organization designed to target and mobilize men to be active participants in the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease. MABC will
1) target and mobilize men to be active participants in the fight against breast cancer;
2)educate men to be effective support partners and provide services to help them cope with the impact of a loved one's breast cancer diagnosis and treatment;
3)design and fund a national mammography program providing access to early detection and treatment of breast cancer for low-income, underserved, and uninsured women; and
4)award grants to other breast cancer organizations and research projects that conform to MABC's mission.

Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer - MSDBC is a national nonprofit organization co-founded by a mother (Charmayne Dierker) and her daughter (Lillie Shockney) in March 1995. The support services provided by this organization are free and are designed to help mothers who have daughters battling breast cancer.

Musiciansurvivors.org - The Life and Livelihood Study has been launched to examine the physical and occupational well being of women musicians who have had breast cancer. This national study has been designed to develop a profile of how the diagnosis and treatment of the disease affects female musicians. Physical problems that follow recovery from breast cancer treatment can be particularly burdensome to musicians, because of their physically demanding occupations or avocations. The website features an anonymous online survey that musicians who have had completed their breast cancer treatment may complete. National Comprehensive Cancer Network

North Carolina - The Breast Cancer Resource Directory of provides comprehensive listings of support groups, suppliers and stores with breast cancer-related products, and hospitals and cancer centers in every county in North Carolina. It also provides information about treatment decisions, managing side effects, coping with post treatment issues, clinical trials, genetic testing, stem cell and bone marrow transplants, home health care, hospice care, end of life issues, financial assistance, insurance and legal issues, complementary therapies, caregiver's and children's issues, advanced/metastatic disease, advocacy, and information for special populations such as men with breast cancer, underserved ethnic populations, young women and lesbians.

Sharsheret is a national organization of cancer survivors dedicated to addressing the unique concerns of young Jewish women facing breast cancer. Sharsheret, Hebrew for "chain," was founded in 2001 by Rochelle Shoretz, a former Law Clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who recognized the need for a breast cancer organization that would provide culturally sensitive support for Jewish women after her own diagnosis at age 28. Since the organization's founding, Sharsheret has responded to thousands of phone calls from health care professionals, Jewish organizations, women's organizations, women affected by breast cancer, their families, and friends. Sharsheret's efforts to support young women and educate health care professionals have been recognized with prestigious awards and significant media coverage. The organization has been featured in more than 75 publications and media outlets nationwide, including the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Self Magazine, and CBS News.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to LIVING with BREAST CANCER a Macmillan Publication (www.macmillan.com) - In the war on breast cancer, no survivor emerges without serious battle scars and lingering wounds. According to Sharon Sorensen and Suzanne Metzger, both breast cancer survivors and co-authors of the new book “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Living With Breast Cancer,” from the first hint of a lump or suspicious mammogram through surgery and treatment and on to follow-up for the rest of the woman’s life, there are dozens of details and issues to be confronted and the need for support is ongoing. This book was written as an “in-print support group” for women battling breast cancer and for the family members and friends who care about them. In this book, breast cancer patients will find the answers to the overwhelming number of questions that arise at each stage – questions that all-too-often are never addressed and sometimes are even avoided. For instance, How do you find your medical “dream team”? How will this affect your family and loved ones? What do you do about your career and your job? What are the aftereffects of the various types of treatment and how do you decide between the treatment options? What is lymphedema and can it be prevented? Where can you turn for support? What are the pros and cons of breast reconstruction versus a prosthesis? How do you handle the roller coaster of emotions that you experience before, during and following treatment?

The Patient/Partner Project - free information, resources, and Internet services for patients and their families. Keep friends and family informed about the patient's progress with our free online progress reporting system. It is safe, private, secure, and easy to use. Post progress reports on our site; every time you do, our system sends an email to all of your registered family and friends, containing a link to what you just wrote. No one can access your reports without knowing your unique MemberID, chosen by you when you registered to use our site. Also, sign up for our free email mini-course, consisting of six emails sent one every other day, each containing an article about a coping strategy.

Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is the premier international organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women and breast cancer. YSC works with survivors, caregivers, and the medical, research, advocacy and legislative communities to increase the quality and quantity of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and under.

YSC, headquartered in New York, has twenty-four affiliates across the country with more than 25,000 survivors and supporters nationally and internationally.
